Pneumothorax (artificiel) : insufflation d'air, d'azote dans la cavité pleurale d'un tuberculeux, destinée à provoquer mécaniquement l'affaissement du poumon, afin de permettre la cicatrisation des cavernes (remplacée maintenant par la prise d'antibiotiques). — Abrév. cour. (1948) PNEUMO . On lui a fait un pneumo. Des pneumos.

MÉD. ,,Épanchement d'air dans la cavité pleurale`` (TRIQUET 1981). Pneumothorax spontané. L'observation clinique avait démontré que bien souvent un pneumothorax, en supprimant les mouvements et le fonctionnement d'un poumon malade, favorisait la cicatrisation des lésions (ROGER ds Nouv. Traité Méd. fasc. 4 1925, p.253).
♦Pneumothorax artificiel; p.abrév., pneumo. Méthode de traitement de la tuberculose par introduction d'air dans la cavité pleurale. Conçu par Forlanini comme le traitement par excellence de la tuberculose pulmonaire (1912), le pneumothorax artificiel a connu des applications accessoires d'ordre diagnostique (BARIÉTY, COURY, Hist. méd., 1963, p.648).
